Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in America, is a performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper as well as a singer. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. Both were Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who was a teacher at Irvington High School. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was raised within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage before she was eight years old. The word means extremely sensitive in Arabic. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. She performed the number Home from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her beatboxing career. Latifah is one of the original members of the Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. Her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
